Les insurgés de la Commune incarcérés à Rochefort puis déportés

6000 « insurgés » communards, sur les quelques 28 000 « prévenus » parmi plus de 40 000 arrêtés à Paris et dans la région parisienne entre avril et juin 1871, furent incarcérés dans tous les forts militaires environnant Rochefort et sur des navires-pontons à l’embouchure de la Charente. 127 d’entre eux moururent dans ces prisons, à l’hôpital maritime ou à fond de cale, avant tout jugement. Et c’est de la rade de l’île d’Aix que la plupart des 3 800 condamnés à la plus lourde peine à la déportation, ont été embarqués à partir de 1873 à destination de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (dont Louise Michel). THE PARIS COMMUNE REBELS, FROM THEIR IMPRISONMENT IN ROCHEHORT TO THEIR DEPORTATION

Between April and June1871 following  the Paris Commune uprising, more than 40,000 people were arrested and  28,000 were found guilty of rebellion against the government.  6,000 were imprisoned in the military forts near Rochefort and on prison boats in the estuary of the River Charente. 127 died in jail  without trial in the military hospital or in the holds of ships.

Most of the 3,800 prisoners who had received the heaviest sentence were deported to New Caledonia in 1873. Among them was Louise Michel (Re. Roccafortis. N°68).
